1950
Casino Royale1950 is a hinge year connecting Royale’s postwar revival to the scale of the baccarat contest that James Bond enters. It is named both as the year a Paris syndicate renewed the Casino Royale and as the precedent for the record-sized stake that gives Bond’s later wager its public significance.
Royale’s Revival
By 1950, Royale had fallen back on summer visitors, its winter fishing fleet, and modest returns from its casino. The resort’s earlier mineral-water venture had not survived competition from larger producers. Against that decline, the Casino’s baroque style and associations with Victorian luxury appealed to a Paris syndicate holding substantial funds belonging to expatriate Vichyites, which took an interest in the town that year.
The casino was repainted in white and gilt, its rooms redone in pale grey and wine-red, and its gardens and fountains restored. Royale’s two main hotels, the Splendide and the Hermitage, were also refurbished and restaffed. The year therefore marks a deliberate investment in the resort’s image: its old-fashioned elegance was turned into an attraction intended to draw visitors and revenue.
A Benchmark at the Baccarat Table
The year reappears in Bond’s explanation of the stakes at the baccarat table. Le Chiffre has bought the bank for a million francs, leaving him with twenty-four million in capital, while Bond has about the same amount. Bond plans to keep accepting the bank’s wagers until one of them breaks the other, even though the other players may affect each man’s position along the way.
As the bank grows, the possibility of a thirty-two-million-franc wager becomes a spectacle as well as a contest. The chef de partie invokes Deauville in 1950 as the only previous occasion on which baccarat had reached that stake, adding that the rival Casino de la Forêt at Le Touquet had never approached it. The reference gives the wager a historical measure of rarity and helps explain the crowd’s excitement when Bond follows it.
Past and Present Stakes
The two uses of 1950 place commercial recovery and gambling drama side by side. In Royale, the year marks a syndicate’s bet on the revenue that the casino’s restored luxury might attract. At the baccarat table, it supplies a precedent against which the present wager can be judged. In both contexts, the year is associated with attempts to turn money and risk into renewed standing: the resort seeks new prosperity, while Bond and Le Chiffre stake their positions on a contest whose outcome cannot be secured in advance.
